TOSSA DE MAR

The Flower of the Sea, on the Costa Brava

Tossa de Mar is a medieval town located on the south of the Costa Brava, the "wild coast" of Spain. It is on the winding road between Lloret de Mar and Sant Feliu.

This town of Roman origins is a fascinating fishing town, well-known for its Medieval castle and beaches. It is surrounded by white houses, narrow cobblestoned streets and the impressive Mediterranean coastline.

Ruins of the old Roman wall were discovered inside the walled town at the beginning of the last century, along with ruins of houses in other parts of the city.

In Tossa de Mar there is a wall-in old town called Vila Vella, It was built between the 12th and 14th centuries to protect the place from pirate attacks. It is the only example of a fortified medieval town still standing on the Catalan coast. At the highest point, on the top of Mount Guardí, a spectacular turreted castle overlooking the bay was built. It was the castle of the Abbot of the Monastery Santa Maria de Ripoll, the territorial Lord of the town. The castle, though, was later replaced by a wind mill and in the 19th century it became a lighthouse which is still active. In 1931, the site was declared a national historic monument. Also, three of the five original towers have been preserved: the Homage Tower, the Entrance Tower and the Jonas Tower.

The Entrance Tower was also known as the Hours Tower because of the enormous clock which used to hang on its walls. Anyone who wanted to enter the old town, had to use that main entry. However, enemies were not welcomed and, thus, the space between the doors was filled with sand bags so that to make the entry to the town almost impossible.

Once into the old town, you can enjoy a delightful stroll along the narrow streets and admire the beautiful houses. Some of them belong to locals, others are houses to rent and the rest belong to people from Barcelona as a vacancy house. Moreover, the bigger ones were turned into restaurants more than 20 years ago. The Governor's house, the House of Holy Cloth, a medieval hospital, an remnants of a Romanesque church and a Gothic church can also be found within the walls of the old town.

Go up to the lookout and you'll see the wonderful bay, which remains nearly intact due to the absence of high buildings and hotels. And if you fancy sunbathing and relaxing on the sand, there are three splendid beaches: Platja Gran, La Mar Menuda, and El Codolar.

I'd really recommend Tossa de Mar, on the Costa Brava, for a relaxing, enjoyable vacation at the Mediterranean sea and within a stunning Medieval natural ambiance.
Tossa de Mar stands out for its beauty and quietness.
