    • 1). Double-click the Excel spreadsheet on your computer. This opens the spreadsheet and loads Microsoft Excel at the same time.

    • 2). Click the "File" menu item. Click "Save As" to bring up a dialog box. Click the "Tools" button at the bottom of the window and select "General Options."

    • 3). Enter a password for your XLS file. Click "OK" to save the changes. Click the "Save" button in the main dialog window.

    • 4). Close the spreadsheet, and double-click it again to test your new settings. Instead of the spreadsheet automatically opening, a password dialog box is shown. Enter the password value you set in Step 3 and click "OK." The spreadsheet opens.
