Remove the Alternator

• 1). Open the hood and disconnect the negative (black) battery cable using a wrench.
  
  
• 2). Look at the belt tensioner assembly configuration.
  
  
• 3). Unplug the electrical connector from the rear of the alternator.
  
  
• 4). Disconnect the wire from the rear of the alternator using a small wrench.
  
  
• 5). Unscrew the alternator mounting bolts and spacer, if equipped, using a ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
  
  
• 6). Remove the alternator from the mounting bracket and engine compartment.
  
  

Install the New Alternator

• 1). Position the new alternator on the mounting bracket.
  
  
• 2). Start the alternator mounting bolts by hand. Then tighten the mounting bolts using the ratchet, ratchet extension and socket.
  
  
• 3). Connect the wire to the rear of the alternator using the small wrench.
  
  
• 4). Plug the electrical connector to the rear of the alternator.
  
  
• 5). Rotate the belt tensioner pulley using the ratchet and socket or pry bar, depending on your particular 5.0L engine model, and slip the belt over the alternator pulley. Carefully release the tensioner pulley. Make sure the belt is properly mounted on all the pulleys.
  
  
• 6). Reconnect the battery cable using the wrench and close the hood.
