How to Arrange Furniture in Small Rooms

27
    • 1). Decide what furniture and items are essential in your room. Clutter shrinks any space. Pare down to the must-have pieces only. Essential pieces in a bedroom are a bed, a dresser, side tables and lamps. In an office, you need a desk, a table for the printer, bookshelves and a filing cabinet. In a living room, you need a couch, coffee table and television.

    • 2). Place the biggest piece of furniture first. Set it up facing the focal point of the room. The focal point should be something interesting or eye-catching. It is the first thing you will notice when you walk into the room. For instance, in a bedroom, the focal point might be sliding glass windows with a view of the outdoors or a favorite painting. In a living room, it could be a television or a fireplace. Often the focal point in an office is a computer or a picture on the wall.

Arrange the second largest pieces next. Keep all entryways clear to increase the sense of space.

    • 3). Decide what other pieces of furniture you need in the room. For instance, in an office, you might want to add bookshelves and extra tables for your printers and photocopiers.

Arrange the smaller pieces of furniture around the larger pieces and test them out. If you add tables to your office, make sure you can reach the printer from your desk. See how easy it is to reach the photocopier from your desk or to access books on your bookshelf. Keep testing it until you reach an arrangement that feels comfortable and convenient to you.

    • 4). Add a variety of textures to the spaces. Mix in soft rugs and fabrics to complement wood floors and tables. Place the rugs underneath a desk in the office or on the floor at the end of the bed. If you have an open corner, you can arrange the rug diagonally to create an interesting angle in the room.

Spice up your bedding by placing satin-covered pillows on top of a cotton bedspread.

    • 5). Lighten up the room. Use light bulbs that filter out yellow rays and create brighter, cleaner light, such as General Electric's Reveal light bulbs.

Keep curtains and blinds open during the day. The lighter a room is, the larger it feels.
