How to Start a Book Club for New Moms
- 1). Make a list of all the women you know who have recently had babies. This could include relatives, neighbors, coworkers and women from your prenatal classes.
- 2). Call all the women on your list and see if they are interested in starting a book club for new moms. Get a feel for what each new mom wants from the book club--what types of books they are interested in, what days and times are good for meetings, and how often each new mom wants to meet. The more you know about what each member is wanting to get out of the book club, the easier it will be for you to structure your book club for new moms.
- 3). Take charge. Host the first book club meeting at your home at a time that is convenient for the majority of your new moms.
- 4). Arrange for a couple of babysitters to come to the first meeting to help watch the babies so the moms can catch their breath and discuss the new book club.
- 5). As the book club coordinator, choose the first book and present it at the first meeting. Choose something light--now is not the time for Shakespeare and Dickens. New moms are often sleep-deprived and stressed out caring for their new babies, so choose a fun book that's easy to set down and pick back up in a new mom's "spare" time.
- 6). At the first meeting, discuss how often you want to meet--once a month is probably best for a book club of new moms with a lot of other things on their plate. Decide the best time to meet, who will choose the next book and host the meeting, and how everyone wants to discuss the book (preplanned questions vs. open discussion).
- 7). Set aside some time at the end of the first meeting to talk... about babies, concerns, advice, you name it. New moms need a lot of support and the book club can help provide that too.
- 8). Keep the book club casual and friendly. Having a newborn is stressful, don't make the being part of the book club that way. All the new moms will not always read each book, but that's not the point of the book club. Starting a book club for new
