Active Directory is the main network configuration component in Windows 2000. Windows 2000's server application has Active Directory installed along with several tools that help administrators maintain the users and devices configured on the network. These tools are beneficial for network administrators who have large enterprise networks to maintain. - The Active Directory Size tool detects the size of the Active Directory file used to manage the network. The server that hosts Active Directory requires plenty of space, especially if the network is a large enterprise network with several thousand machines. The size tool ensures that the Windows 2000 machine has enough disk space to handle the Active Directory storage space requirements.
- The Application Programming Interface Monitor (APImon) logs activity on the API interface. An API interface on Windows 2000 is a development tool used to interface with Active Directory services from customized software. Developers can add, edit and delete users and devices in Active Directory using the API. The APImon software logs each connection to the API as well as the command executed against the server.
- Each application on a user machine on the domain is controlled from the Windows 2000 machine. The Application Security tool allows administrators to control software access on the server. This is beneficial for server administrators who handle customize software located and executed on the server. This blocks unauthorized users from viewing private company data such as contracts, employee information and financial data.
