What Makes Celebrating with Family on Cinco de Mayo So Delicious?

21
Even though adults may head to celebrations in the neighborhood or to nearby Mexican restaurants to party, there are plenty of ways to celebrate this holiday from the comfort of your own home. It is a good way to bring some multicultural flair to your household, learning many new things while you are at it.

If you have elementary aged children, have them prepare for the holiday by making a piata. They are very simple to make. Put some candy treats in a large round balloon and then blow it up to size. Apply papier mache techniques to the balloon. Have your kids pick out some bright, colorful tissue paper and mix up some simple glue with flour and water. Make sure it is somewhat runny, not thick like paste. Have them apply the colorful tissue paper all over the balloon and let it dry. Before they break the piata on Cinco de Mayo, stick a pin through the tissue paper to pop the balloon.

Keep the kids busy making colorful placemats. Give them some construction paper in bright colors like red, blue, green and yellow that they can weave together. Bright colors are a part of everyday life in Mexico, and even more so on holidays. The bright placemats will look great on the table and the kids will enjoy helping to decorate for the festivities.

Have the whole family design the menu for Cinco de Mayo. Have each person select part of the meal. If other friends are coming over, have them bring different condiments; like cheeses, olives, cilantro, tomatoes, refried bean, avocado, salsa and chips.

If you have small children, print some Mexican animals or designs to make into coloring pages. They can learn about the pictures they just made and tape them on the walls to decorate. Older children may make handcrafted maracas for everyone to play with all day to celebrate.

Making tissue paper flowers can be fun. This authentic Mexican craft can be put in vases or you can place them in your hair. After you make a few, you will see how fun these are.

Cinco de Mayo can be a great new family tradition if you have never celebrated it before. It gives you a chance to learn more about Mexican culture and it adds another great celebration to your family calendar. Invite the rest of the family or some friends over to join in the fun. Play Mexican music during dinner and invite everyone to dance and have fun all evening long.

Anything that can gather your entire family for a night of fun and food is worth looking at. Think about many ways to learn about the Mexican culture and how you can incorporate it in with your family's celebration. You will be surprised at how fast the evening becomes a new family tradition everyone will eagerly anticipate every year. Bringing in traditions and cuisine from another culture will help the whole family learn about their neighbors and gain an appreciation for their culture.
