School

• In most cases, your exchange student will attend school while she stays with you. This gives the student a chance to experience many aspects of American school culture, such as classrooms, testing, gym, recess, school plays and pep rallies. If you have school-aged children of your own, invite your exchange student to attend extracurricular activities with your kids. These might include music lessons, sports events or school dances.
  
  

Meals

• Provide your exchange student with a variety of American eating experiences. Serve the home-cooked meals your family typically eats, but try some pre-made frozen meals and take-out as well. Stop at popular fast-food restaurants once in a while, and go out to eat at your family's favorite restaurant. Take your exchange student to the grocery store where you normally shop. In addition to serving typical American meals, let her cook some meals that are traditional in her country. This will allow you to learn from her culture as she learns from yours.
  
  

Holidays

• Show your host student how Americans celebrate holidays. Take her to a St. Patrick's Day parade or Fourth of July barbecue and fireworks display. Holidays like Halloween, Christmas and Easter are rich with culture, so if you're lucky enough to have an exchange student during these holidays, teach your guest all about trick-or-treating, Easter egg decorating and Christmas caroling. Thanksgiving dinner may be especially memorable for a foreign exchange student.
  
  

Special Occasions and Events

• If possible, bring your student to special events such as graduations or weddings. Before attending a graduation, explain the significance of commencement speakers, valedictorians, diplomas and the tradition of cap-tossing. Tell the student about the many traditions associated with American weddings.
  
  

Sightseeing

• If you live near a major U.S. city such as New York, Boston or Chicago, take your student to see the big-city sights. He'll probably want to see well-known historic spots, such as the Statue of Liberty, but direct her to lesser-known sights as well. Consider buying tickets for a guided tour of the city, or visit art museums and ballparks. Enjoying a Cub's game at historic Wrigley Field, for instance, is as American an experience as they come.
