How to Install a Fuel Filter in a 1987 Mazda

15
    • 1). Locate the fuel tank under the vehicle. The fuel tank is kept at the back of the vehicle.

    • 2). Trace the fuel line coming out of the fuel tank and follow it toward the front of the vehicle. The fuel filter is in-line and will be along the fuel line. The fuel filter is generally located under the passenger-side door. The fuel filter may also be located in the engine compartment by the carburetor, depending on your model of Mazda.

    • 3). Pull the inlet line off the filter. The line will be held tight with a quick-disconnect fitting that requires separating the tabs and pulling the line away from the filter. Ensure a drain pan is under the fuel line to catch the excess fuel.

    • 4). Pull the outlet line off the filter by separating the tabs on the quick-disconnect fitting and pulling the line away from the filter. Have the drain pan standing by to catch any fuel that may pour out of the filter.

    • 5). Slide the old filter out of the bracket. Replace with the new one. Locate the arrow on the side of the filter and ensure it is pointing toward the front of the vehicle. The arrow designates the flow of the fuel and if installed backward will prevent the vehicle from running.

    • 6). Push the inlet and outlet lines back onto the filter. The lines will lock in place once they are pushed on far enough.

    • 7). Start the vehicle and allow it to idle for five minutes. Observe the filter for any leaks.
