Saltwater Fishing in Maryland
- The saltwater portion of the Chesapeake Bay stretches from the mouth of the Potomac River to Baltimore. It is famous for its striped bass fishing, and the variety of places to stay and things to do.
In addition to stripers, bay fishermen catch croaker, spot, flounder, bluefish and sea trout. Fishing picks up in late April or early May, when the water temperature climbs toward 60 degrees. Fishing for striped bass in September and October is known nationally. - Solomons Island is a boating center.Solomons island maryland, usa image by DSL from Fotolia.com
One of the main boating and fishing centers on the western side of the bay is Solomons Island, located at the mouth of the Patuxent River. You can launch your own boat or charter a local boat to fish for striped bass.
To the south, toward the mouth of the Potomac River, are excellent spots for bottom fishing for croaker and flounder. - Picturesque history of Eastern Shore.oystermans rowboat on the chesapeake bay image by Jorge Moro from Fotolia.com
The Eastern Shore side of the bay is rich in the history of the bay watermen, whose primary harvests were oysters and blue crabs. Don't pass up a chance to visit towns, such as Naticoke and Crisfield.
Striped bass is king on this side of the bay, too. Charters and guides are plentiful, as are public ramps where you can launch your own boat. You also may have entertaining encounters with weakfish (gray trout) and spotted sea trout (speckled trout). - Heading out for a day of wreck fishing.Charter Fishing Boat image by Wimbledon from Fotolia.com
Ocean City is the hub of the state's ocean fishing. It's a fun resort town known for its fishing tournaments and good food.
Inshore fishing includes cruising the wrecks and reefs for tautog and black sea bass. The ever-present bluefish, flounder and striped bass also are available. Your best chance at a trophy is late fall, when stripers are migrating from north to south. - Catching tuna can be a workout.man deep sea fishing image by Gina Smith from Fotolia.com
Tuna, dolphin (mahi) and white marlin are the three most sought after catches. Both bluefin and yellowfin tuna varieties are available. Dolphin are found in areas with some sort of cover, such as a weedline to a packing crate.
An annual white marlin tournament helped put Ocean City on the saltwater fishermen's map. This is a catch-and-release fishery. If your marlin has the length and girth, you can have a replica mount made of that trophy catch.
