How to Connect Fishing Hooks
- 1). For most applications, select a leader that is made of lighter line than your main line. For example, if you are using a 12-pound test as your main line, the leader should be 6 pounds. The leader's purpose is to move the hook and bait or lure a distance from your main line, giving the bait a better presentation to the fish.
- 2). Tie the main line to leader at the head swivel using a cinch knot. To tie a cinch knot, pass the line through the eye swivel, double back and make five or six turns around the line, pass the end through the first loop above the eye of the swivel, then through the larger loop created. Pass the end of the line through the first loop by the eye of the swivel and draw the knot into shape, sliding the coils tightly against the eye of the swivel.
- 3). Attach the hook to the bottom of the leader using the spring clip on the leader.
