How to Eliminate Fire Blight on Gala Apple Trees
- 1). Inspect the orchard during the dormant season for any signs of cankers.
- 2). Remove any branches or trees showing canker during dormant pruning by cutting back to wood that is at least two years old and 8 inches below the visible infection.
- 3). Re-inspect regularly during the growing season for any small cankers you may have missed and remove them.
- 1). Set up a weather monitoring station in the orchard with a rainfall recorder and a maximum/minimum thermometer.
- 2). Record the number of hours that the average temperature in the orchard is greater than 55 F, beginning when the first flower opens.
- 3). Schedule a streptomycin spray for the day before or day of heavy rain or dew, occurring after 200 cumulative hours of average temperature greater than 55 F.
- 4). Re-spray every four days while flowers are blooming, as the previous spray will only protect flowers which were open at that time.
- 5). Apply copper spray at the early green-tip stage to all trees in order to reduce the bacteria's ability to colonize the bark.
