How to Enjoy the Lake Bled Region of Slovenia
- 1). Walk around the lake. This is the best way to get a feel for the ambiance of the place. There is a paved walkway that rings the waters of Lake Bled. The walk around the lake takes about 2 hours, and is a great way to appreciate the easy-going lifestyle of this Eastern European nation.
- 2). Ride a gondola to the church on the island in the middle of the lake. Once at the island there are steps that run from the church door right down to the water’s edge. The Italian border and the city of Venice are nearby, much evident in the style of the boats that somewhat resemble a gondola. Take a ride out to the island and pay a visit to the church. If you are lucky, you might come across wedding guests gathered on the steps, for the church is a very popular place to get married.
- 3). Enjoy a piece of Lake Bled cream cake. This local specially is served all over town. There are several bakeries near the bus station that are very popular, but you can also find the tasty treat in many restaurants.
- 4). Visit the Bled Castle. This old edifice sits on a cliff overlooking the lake with the snow-capped peaks of the Julian Alps, visible in the background. Just climbing the hill and peering down over the cliff is a good activity, but the Bled castle does have exhibitions and displays within the castle, plus an interesting chapel. It was built in the eleventh century and remodeled in the seventeenth century.
- 5). Walk the Vintgar gorge on the Radovna River. The Vintgar is a long series of rapids and waterfalls that cascades between sheer rock walls on both sides of the river. To negotiate the waterway, a walkway was built nearly a century ago. This walkway is like none other, for the platform sits just a few feet above the raging waters. So close is the walkway to the water that you can feel the spray from the whitewater.
- 6). Enjoy a nice dinner. Restaurants abound in this popular tourist city. There is a very nice restaurant at the Penzion Bledec Youth Hostel. Beware that the hostel often fills up, but still inquire here if you are looking for a cheap room, for they can refer you to other similar places (see Resources below).
