Other Uses for Salad Spinners

33
    • People who own salad spinners know they're effective at their intended purpose: to rinse and spin-dry salad greens. The construction of this device makes it useful for other purposes, as well. The combination of centrifugal force and a straining basket, which separates wet from dry, makes a salad spinner ideal for a number of household tasks, food related and otherwise, that involve a need to separate moisture from objects in a short amount of time.

    Produce

    • In addition to drying salad greens, a salad spinner works great for removing excess moisture from other types of produce. After you rinse vegetables, spin-dry them in your salad spinner before you stir-fry or saute them to avoid having excess water find its way into your wok or skillet.

    Pasta

    • Use your salad spinner to remove water from pasta after cooking and before serving. Spaghetti tends to dry up quickly, so you should forgo spinning that type of pasta, but for pastas like rigatoni and penne that tend to trap water inside, a salad spinner is a great way to remove water from their internal hollows. Don't spin for too long; just a couple of pumps (or pulls of the cord, depending what kind of spinner you have) will do the trick.

    Meat

    • Use your salad spinner to remove extra water and juice from raw meat before cooking (especially good if you're going to dredge the meat in batter or flour) or to dry out cooked, wet meats like canned tuna or chicken, or cooked, thawed shrimp.

    Fabric

    • Salad spinners can also be used for non-food purposes. They're very similar in how they work to machines designed to spin water out of wet bathing suits, so they work great for spinning water out of small garments after hand washing and before sending it through a clothes dryer, saving time and electricity.

    Randomizer

    • Use your salad spinner to mix up any small objects you might need to randomize, such as a collection of beads (say, if you want to mix them for wholesaling), or raffle tickets.

    Juicer

    • If you like fresh orange juice, especially of the pulp-free variety, use your salad spinner. Peel an orange, then place the section in your salad spinner. Mash the fruit into pulp inside the basket before spinning vigorously. Stop the spinner occasionally and mash the pulp more to break up the solid structures of the fruit a little more. Pour the juice out as you go, if too much builds up.

    Tomato Seed Removal

    • Use a salad spinner to remove seeds from ripe tomatoes. Cut the tomato into quarters, and send it through until the wet, squishy insides detach from the more firm, fleshy outside of the fruit.
