How to Sand a House for Painting
- 1). Sand rust off of metallic surfaces, using 80-grit sandpaper. Fold the sandpaper to fit into awkward areas. Wear gloves during this step.
- 2). Remove stubborn bits of loose and peeling paint, using 120-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the grain of wood.
- 3). Abrade vinyl and plastic surfaces to promote primer and paint adhesion by sanding them with 120-grit sandpaper. Use 220-grit sandpaper on fiberglass surfaces. Load the sandpaper into a palm sander ease the process. Scour the surfaces in a back and forth motion until they feel slightly rough to your fingers.
- 4). Abrade surfaces previously painted with glossy paints by sanding them with 220-grit sandpaper. Scour the glossy paint in a back and forth motion until it feels slightly coarse.
- 5). Remove varnish coatings from wood surfaces using 120-grit sandpaper. Sand along with the grain of the wood until the finish appears dull.
