Western Craft Ideas for VBS for Teenagers

Create a burlap journal cover by cutting two pieces of cardboard exactly the same size and cutting a spine for it (a thin rectangular shape, the same height as the other two pieces). Set the cardboard pieces on top of the burlap fabric with just a little space in between them, about 1/4 inch or less. Glue them down. Glue the edges of the burlap on the inside of the covers and spine.
Decide how many pieces of paper you want. You need to use paper that is twice the size of your cover so that you can fold them all in half. Once the paper is folded, stack the folded pages. Sew the folded side together with a needle and thick thread. Once they are all securely sewn together, glue the sewn side onto the cardboard spine. Allow the glue to dry. Afterward, you can "brand" stencils with spray paint on the outside. Use the journal in your personal Bible study. - Use different colored beans and rice for more of a mosaic effect.Hemera Technologies/AbleStock.com/Getty Images
Cut a cross out of cardboard about 17 inches high. Gather different colored beans and rice. The more variety you have, the better the project will turn out. Using glue, line the outer edge with one type of bean. The next layer should be a different color that contrasts with the first. Keep layering the beans in this way. Other patterns can also be created, especially within the shape, like creating shapes or checkers. - Using rope on the back for hanging can add to the western effect.Hemera Technologies/AbleStock.com/Getty Images
Cut out different shapes of cardboard. Since it is a western project, shapes like a horseshoe or cactus or cowboy hat would work well. Print out different scripture verses. Cut out images from magazines or print images out, some with iconic western imagery and others with random scenes and objects. Print enough that everyone will be able to cover their cardboard with images.
With glue, let the teens cover and layer their cardboard with the images and with the scripture verse that they chose. Allow the collages to dry. You can add a string or ribbon to the back for easy hanging. - Western bandannas come in lots of different colors. Buy enough western bandannas for everyone to have two bandannas. Buy another contrasting fabric. Pin the bandannas wrong side out (so that the correct side is facing each other and the wrong side is facing the outside). Sew three sides and most of one side, leaving an opening about 4 to 5 inches not sewn. Remove pins and turn the pillow right side out. Stuff the pillows with pillow stuffing. Now sew the opening so that you have a full pillow. Cut a square big enough for half an index card to fit into of the contrasting fabric. Sew the square onto the pillow-but only the sides and bottom. Leave the top unsewn. This is where the teens can write down a prayer request, and put it in the little square when they pray at night.
