How to Remove the Fuel Tank on a 1997 Dodge Ram
- 1). Open the gas door. Remove the gas cap and then remove the filler neck from the bedside using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Push the filler neck into the bed.
- 2). Shine a flashlight between the bedside and the frame of the truck. Look for a ground strap, which is installed on some models. Unbolt the ground strap using the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.
- 3). Place the wood block onto the head of the jack. Lift the jack until it contacts the center of the gas tank. Loosen the straps holding the gas tank to the frame using a 1/2-inch ratchet, extension and socket. Lower the tank using the jack until you can see the top of the tank.
- 4). Disconnect the fuel lines and wiring on the top of the tank using a flathead screwdriver. Place an assistant on one side of the tank, then lower the tank off of the frame while your assistant balances it on the jack. Pull the gas tank away from the truck.
