Dehydration & Water Retention

31

    Dehydration

    • Dehydration occurs when the amount of fluids within your body declines because of complications from diarrhea, vomiting, excessive sweating or high fever. The most effective way to treat this condition is to drink more water, especially while working or exercising outside in hot weather. However, if you have a child who suffers from dehydration, a doctor may suggest an oral rehydration solution such as Pedialyte, depending on the severity or persistence of the condition.

    Water Retention

    • Water retention occurs when fluids leak into the body's tissues from the blood stream causing swelling in extremities such as the hands and feet. As with dehydration, drinking more water is the most effective way to treat this condition. In addition, there are many natural remedies for water retention, including Vitamin B supplements.

    Complication

    • The most common complication associated with dehydration and water retention is kidney failure, which could eventually lead to coma or even death. Dehydration also causes muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting.
