How to Grow Trees in Texas

17
    • 1). Choose a tree variety that will have enough space in your yard as it matures. Many people make the mistake of planting a tree that will eventually outgrow its designated planting location. For small yards, plant smaller trees such as dwarf plum trees or ornamental citrus trees. Larger yards can accommodate maple and elm trees.

    • 2). Check with your local utility company to ensure that there are no utility lines underneath the designated planting location. You can request for an individual to come out and inspect the site. Tree roots growing into your utility lines can damage your utility lines.

    • 3). Check your soil's draining abilities. Texas soil is made up of three different types of organic material: loam, clay and sand. Loam is the preferred soil type, because it has effective draining abilities. Sand can pose problems, because it often is too dry. Clay is generally water logged and can cause your tree to become infected with fungal diseases. Grab a handful of soil and squeeze. Soil that is malleable in the hand is loam, soil that breaks apart is sand and soil that releases water is clay.

    • 4). Amend your soil and prepare the planting location. Spread a 6-inch layer of both compost and builder's sand to amend clay soil. Work the mixture into the first 6 inches of top soil. Increase the water-retention of sandy soil by spreading a 5-inch layer of sphagnum moss over the planting location and working it into the soil.

    • 5). Plant your tree seedling in the winter months. Winter is the best time to plant trees in Texas because of the cool temperatures. Dig a hole twice the size as the tree's root and the same same height as the plant while in the container. Pack soil around the base of the tree and water thoroughly.
