Standard Auto Insurance Policy

13

    Liability

    • Liability has two major parts. The bodily injury portion pays for medical and legal costs incurred by another party or parties for which you are responsible in an at-fault accident. The property damage portion pays for damage caused to another vehicle or other property for which you are responsible.

A liability limit of 100/300/100 would represent a maximum settlement of $100,000 injury per person, $300,000 injury aggregate for the accident, $100,000 property damage.

    Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist

    • This section pays for injuries and injury-related damages suffered by you and your passengers when the responsible party is not sufficiently insured to cover the damages. Your policy limit must exceed that of the responsible party's liability limit. Sometimes this coverage applies for hit-and-run situations. Endorsements are often available to add property damage to this coverage for your own vehicle.

    Collision

    • Collision coverage pays for the damages caused to your own insured vehicle, regardless of who is at fault, when caused by a collision as defined in your policy contract. Repairs will be offered in amounts up to the current cash value of the vehicle. If repair amounts exceed the cash value, the vehicle will be declared a total loss according to the laws of your state. All settlements will be subject to your policy deductible.

    Comprehensive

    • Comprehensive, or "Other-Than-Collision," pays for damage to your insured vehicle either by causes other than collision or by a set list of causes as defined in your policy. Settlements of this type will also be subject to your policy deductible and the possibility of total loss. It is not a requirement in most states to have the same deductible for comprehensive and collision.

    Medical Payments

    • Some policies include Medical Payments, which cover injuries to the driver and passengers of the insured vehicle, regardless of fault. This coverage is not mandatory in all states. Without this, people in an at-fault situation must rely on their individual health insurance for their injuries. In some cases, a deductible may apply to settlements of this type.
