Oklahoma Boar Hunting

28

    Types

    • The largest boar populations in Oklahoma are in the southeast, east and south-central parts of the state. The popular hunting targets are the large Eurasian, or Russian hogs and feral hogs. Some Russian boars can weigh about 130 pounds with tusks extending more than 5 inches from the lower jaw.

    Methods

    • The varied cover and habitat allows hunters to use several different hunting methods. The most popular methods are spot-and-stalk and stand hunting. For a spot-and-stalk hunt, you will locate a boar and then carefully stalk into position to perform a shot. Stand hunting involves sitting in a ground blind or tree stand overlooking a trail, feeding area or water hole and waiting until a boar offers a shot opportunity.

    Regulations

    • Oklahoma, like other states with populations of wild hogs, has few regulations regarding boar hunting. The state does not consider feral hogs or boars a game animal but requires hunters of it to have a valid hunting license. Hunters are not allowed to use dogs but may hunt boars year-round. Blood tests on the boar are required if the boar is going to be transferred within state lines.

    Habitat

    • Locate the boars' home range and feeding areas and focus your hunting on these areas. The boars tend to prefer habitat with adequate water and dense vegetation. They remain active at any time of the day and can have a range from .4 to 19 square miles. Concentrations of boars can be found around food sources, such as plums, prickly pears, mesquite, corn, wheat or soybeans.

    Permission

    • Obtain permission before hunting on private property. Most landowners will agree to grant you access but may charge a "trespass" fee or trophy fee based on the size of the boar. If you have trouble finding a landowner who will grant access, consider hiring an outfitter. Several outfitters in Oklahoma offer boar hunts.
