How to File for an Abandoned Vehicle Title in Arizona
- 1). Contact the Department of Motor Vehicles in your county and file a report of the abandoned vehicle using the DMV's abandoned vehicle form. Include the description of the vehicle (make, model, year and color) along with the license plate number and vehicle identification number.
- 2). File a notice of intent to transfer the ownership of the vehicle through the DMV. This requires the filing of a transfer of ownership form with the department.
- 3). Wait 45 days for the DMV to contact the previous owner of the vehicle. The DMV will also list the vehicle as abandoned in the newspaper if the owner does not respond or the letter of contact is returned.
- 4). Complete the transfer of title form for the vehicle and return this to the DMV to title the vehicle in your own name. This will be sent to you in the mail if no one responds to the DMV's contact letters or newspaper ad.
