How to Get a Driving Permit in Arizona
- 1). Attend and complete a high school driver education program. A list of locations is on the Arizona MVD website; there is a link in the Resources section.
- 2). Pass a written and vision test at an Arizona MVD office to get your Graduated Instruction Permit. This permit lets you drive with a licensed driver in the car. To take the test, you must be 15 years and 6 months old and be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old and is carrying a valid driver's license. The permit costs $7.
- 3). Practice behind the wheel for at least six months. You must complete at least 20 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driver, and an additional 10 hours at night.
- 4). Go back to the MVD office and apply for a Graduated Driver's License after turning 16. This license lets a teen drive between 5:01 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. Without a parent or legal guardian in the vehicle, the teen cannot drive with more than one passenger until he is 18--unless the underage passengers are siblings.
