Locking Your Doors

13
When selecting locks for the doors in your house take inventory of the type of doors you have and then select the most practical lock that gives you a level of comfort and security.
I recently had to change some locks on French doors.
I selected a lock set (knob and deadbolt locks) that were keyed alike.
The deadbolt lock has a thumb latch, meaning that you turn the latch with your hand to lock and unlock it.
This was probably not the best decision as far as security is concerned, however they were upstairs doors and if we had a fire I wanted escape to be easy.
Besides I have an alarm system that detects glass breakage.
The so called "proper" way would be to use a double cylinder lock with keys on both sides.
This is because of the glass on the door; the bad guy could break the glass and turn the latch to gain entry.
Most people that have these types of locks usually leave the key in the interior lock, instead of hanging the key in a place near the door, but not where someone breaking the glass can get to it.
This is what I mean by comfort and security, in my case I felt more comfortable with the latch on the interior part of the lock and with the glass breakage sensor if some broke the glass the alarm would go off.
So choose the best locks you can afford and that gives you and your family a strong sense of comfort and security.
The garage door-it is very important to think about the biggest door in your house.
First of all if you have a garage door opener, you probably have the remote controls in your car.
Do you lock your cars when they are outside in your driveway? If not the bad guys can just open your car door push the button and they are in your garage from there they have your tools to break into the door leading from your garage into your house.
While we are talking about garage doors make sure that they have deadbolt locks installed on them especially the door leading into your house.
Also your garage door opener should automatically change the codes every time you use it.
When going on vacation consider disconnecting the opener and manually latching the door.
The take-away is to think about ALL your doors and how they are secured.
