How to Install Bilstein Shock Absorbers

    • 1). Put the vehicle in park and apply the emergency brake.

    • 2). Loosen the lug nuts of one of the tires.

    • 3). Locate the proper lifting location for the jack by referring to your vehicle's owners manual. Slide the jack under the vehicle in the proper location and lift the vehicle high enough to remove the tire. Remove the lug nuts and lift the tire from the axle hub.

    • 4). Locate the mounting bolts of the shock absorbers. There is a bolt at each end of the unit. Spray these bolts and nuts with penetrating fluid and allow the fluid to penetrate the bolt for 10 minutes.

    • 5). Loosen and remove the bolts and nuts from the brackets with a ratchet and socket. You may need to hold the nut on the opposite side with a wrench while removing the bolt, depending on your vehicle.

    • 6). Pull the shock absorber from the suspension of the vehicle.

    • 7). Place the Bilstein shock absorber into position. Install the mounting bolts through the brackets. Thread the lock washers onto the bolt and install the retaining nuts. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet and socket.

    • 8). Confirm that each bolt is tight with a ratchet and socket.

    • 9). Place the tire back onto the axle. Line up the wheel studs and push the tire onto the hub so that the studs extend from the wheel

      Place the lug nuts onto the wheel studs and tighten them with a lug-nut wrench.

      Lower the vehicle to the ground and remove the jack.

      Repeat these steps to install the other shock absorbers. They are located at each corner of the vehicle.
