    How to Access the XP System Restore Tool Using DOS

    • 1). Start the computer and press the F8 key when the manufacturer's's logo appears but before the Windows XP logo appears.

    • 2). Scroll through the menu options using the down arrow key. Select "Safe mode with a Command prompt" and hit the Enter key.

    • 3). Type in the administrator ID and password. Hit "Enter."

    • 4). Type in this code in the command prompt box to access the XP system restore tool: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.

    • 5). Hit "Enter." The XP system restore tool will open.

    • 1). Click "Restore my Computer to an Earlier Time" when the XP system restore tool starts.

    • 2). Click "Next."

    • 3). Choose a restore point before your operating system began to malfunction. Click "Next" and "OK."

    • 4). Click "Next" to begin the XP restoration process. Do not turn off the computer or attempt to stop the system restore tool, as this may damage the hard drive. The system restore tool will automatically restart the computer when it has finished restoring the operating system.
