One of the most common diseases in the United States, the Lyme disease is mostly prevalent in those areas which are densely wooded or the areas which are very grassy.
The disease is triggered by a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi.
Rodents like mice generally are the carrier of these bacteria.
The ticks carry this disease from the mice to the humans.
The bite of the ticks causes the bacteria to enter the human bloodstream and cause the disease to spread.
Tick bites are not easy to identify considering that the insect is too small to notice always.
But your nervous system, skin, joints and even your heart can be affected due to this seemingly petty tick bites.
The symptoms of the disease include a circular rash appearing on the bitten area.
This rash can be visible within the 2nd week of the infection penetrating your body.
It develops for up to a period of 30 days.
The other symptoms that occur alongside the rash include swelling of the lymphatic nodes, headache, muscle cramps and fatigue.
The symptoms are very similar to any normal flu.
If the disease symptom are not noticed in the earlier stages and left untreated, the infection can rapidly spread and affect other body organs.
It can affect vital organs like the heart as well.
The Lyme disease that has affected the heart will cause chest pain and irregularity of heart beat.
If it affects the nervous system, it can lead to the development of Bell's palsy and a general numbness of the limbs.
It can cause swelling and pain in the joints and even give rise to condition like meningitis.
Prevention is always better than cure.
So avoid areas that house the ticks.
The Lyme disease is not infectious.
Incase you notice a tick bitten area developing a rash, consult a doctor immediately.
Lyme disease can be treated with the help of antibiotics.
The stage of your illness determines the type of antibiotic to be used.
In the earlier stages of this morbidity oral medicines are prescribed, but if it reaches the later stages, resorting to intravenous drugs remain as the only option.
The joints that have been affected by this disease and have enlarged can be cured by removing the accumulated liquid from them.
Lyme disease affecting the joints can also be treated with the help of Arthrocentesis.
However a constant irritation in the joints can persist even after the treatment.
In that case the doctor tells you to take certain health supplements or vitamin tablets which help in speedy recovery.
