How to Clean Moldy Basement Floors
- 1). Put on the safety gear, and spray down the basement floor with water so you limit the amount of mold that is kicked up into the air as a result of your work.
- 2). Scrub the floor using a heavy duty stiff-bristle push broom and a detergent that does not contain ammonia. You will be using bleach later in the process, so it is important not to mix it with any ammonia as the fumes are toxic.
- 3). Make a solution of hot water and bleach, prepared at a ratio of 1 cup of bleach for every 1 gallon of water. Allow the broom to sit in the bleach and water solution for a few minutes before proceeding.
- 4). Scrub and disinfect the floor thoroughly with the broom and the bleach solution.
- 5). Rinse the floor well with clean water and immediately begin drying it. Use multiple fans, open any windows, and use a dehumidifier to prevent mold from reoccurring due to the moisture.
