Ancient History

• Flowers have graced the dead since prehistoric times. Archaeologists discovered wildflower pollen in soil taken from a Neanderthal burial site in Shanidar, northern Iraq. In theory, flowers were an addition to the ceremony. The cave findings were first brought to the public's attention by anthropologist Ralph S. Solecki, who wrote "First Flower People."

• The entire life cycle, from birth to death, can be be equated and symbolized by flower offerings. Human and plant life are created in an instant. It is beautiful and then, inevitably, we are gone out of this temporary existence. Flowers are as temporary as life itself.

• Flowers, like birth stones, have come to acquire meanings over time. Purity and love are recurring themes of sympathy flowers. Baby's breath means everlasting love and pureness in heart. White carnations indicate innocence, while gladiolus show strength of character and generosity. Lilies generally mean purity, and lily of the valley, perfect purity. Selection Guidelines

• The flower arrangements have specific meanings. Presenting a wreath represents the circle of eternity. It is appropriate to send to anyone. Send smaller wreaths for friends. Family members may want to give a spray of flowers, displayed on an easel. A floral arrangement in a vase is always fitting. Casket sprays are selected by the immediate family.
