How to Replace Couch Pillow Forms

47
    • 1). Measure the pillow from edge to edge if it is square. If the pillow is a rectangle, measure both the length and width. If the pillow is round, measure at the widest point to determine the pillow's diameter. The dimensions you get from measuring will determine the size of the pillow form you need to get. For example, replace a 9-inch square pillow's stuffing with a 9-inch square pillow form.

    • 2). Unzip the cover, if your pillow has a zipper. Compress the old stuffing from the outer edges, and pull the old stuffing out.

    • 3). For pillows without zippers, slide the pointed edge of the seam ripper under the thread, 1 inch in from the corner if the pillow is square. Cut every third stitch, and pull the remaining loose threads out. If the pillow is round, look for the area where the stitching is different, and use the seam ripper to cut the stitches, then remove the threads. Pull out the old stuffing.

    • 4). Compress the new pillow form with your hands, crushing the foam until it is slightly smaller than the opening in the pillow cover. If you have trouble compressing the entire pillow form at one time, compress a few inches and push the form's end through the cover's opening. Then compress the next part of the foam, about 3 inches, and push the form further into the cover. Repeat every 3 inches as needed until the entire form is inside the cover.

    • 5). Zip the cover closed, or thread the hand-sewing needle and knot the thread ends if your pillow cover does not have a zipper.

    • 6). Push the hand you are using to hold the needle inside of the cover and poke the needle through the seam from the wrong side of the fabric, so it sticks out on the right side, right at the opening's edge on the original seam. Pull the thread all the way through.

    • 7). Take the needle across the opening to the other side of the pillow cover, straight across from the point the needle pierced the first side. Poke the needle into the right side of the fabric, so the needle comes out on the wrong side of the fabric. Move the needle 1/8-inch forward, still on the wrong side of the fabric, along the opening, and poke the needle tip straight through. Repeat the straight-across stitches until you reach the end of the opening.

    • 8). Secure the stitches by making at least three stitches at the end, one on top of the other.
