Ford 2006 Mustang Wheel Options

    Steel Wheels

    • Steel rims are normally a fairly heavy and, frankly, ugly alternative to factory alloys, but Ford takes exception to that rule with the Mustang's most basic rim package. Even devoid of plastic cladding, the 16-by-7-inch black-painted steel wheel is a fairly handsome five-spoke design that puts in a good showing against rims costing twice as much. Part number S-03758U45, price $89.99 as of October, 2011.

    Split-Spoke Rims

    • The split-spoke, available in either machined aluminum or chrome finish, came stock on the Mustang GT in 2006. The split-spoke measures 17 by 8 inches, and is so called because it is essentially a wide five-spoke rim with a slot going up the middle of each spoke. While almost perfectly straight for most of their lengths, this wheel's spokes flare out at a sharp angle near the rim edge. The split-spoke is a classic design with a modern edge -- just like the Mustang. Finishes include machine-finish (part number A-03649U10, $161 per rim as of October 2011) and chrome (part number A-03649U85, $299 as of 2011).

    Funnel-Spoke Rims

    • If the original Torque Thrust II is your idea of the perfect rim, then the funnel-spoke is for you. Derived from the rims used on Ford's special edition Bullitt, these neo-classics measure 18 by 8.5 inches for the rear and 18 by 8 inches for the front, and come in several colors and finishes. The original Bullitt's charcoal (gunmetal gray) spokes and machined lip (part number A-03648U30, price $219 per rim) remain, but have some company in the form of black-painted spokes and a machined lip (part number A-03648U45, $219 per rim), fully polished aluminum (part number A-03648U80, $299 per rim) and chrome-plated (part number A-3648U85, $369 per rim) finishes.

    Flat-Spoke Rims

    • The flat-spoke rim is definitely the beefiest of rim offerings available in 2006, and looks like nothing if not a two-dimensional view of the three-dimensional funnel-spoke. The flat-spoke's five, tapered spokes are almost completely flat on the face with a bevel (or "pocket") at the edges leading outward from the center. These rims are to the funnel-spoke what anime is to the Mona Lisa; an intentionally imperfect impression of the original with a personality all its own. The flat-spoke comes with finishes including a standard machined face (part number A-03647U10, $189 per rim), machined face with charcoal-colored pockets (part number A-3647U30, $189 per rim), completely polished (part number A-03647U80, $249 per rim) and chrome-plated (part number A-03647U85, $319 per rim).

    Split-Spoke II

    • These rims are probably the most dramatic of all rims available for the Mustang, and recall one of the most famous Fords of all time. Actually, Carroll Shelby would dispute that, since the AC Cobra that bears his name wasn't actually a Ford. The "flying-V" or split-spoke II wheel is a modernization of the faux-spoke wheels that Shelby installed on his 427 Cobras, but the spaces between the spokes and the ridges on them have been raised to create a chiseled, split-five-spoke design that recalls the original but doesn't ape it completely, the way the funnel-spokes do with Torque Thrust II's. The 16-by-7-inch Split-Spoke II comes in finishes including silver (number A-03587U20, $161 per rim), chrome (number A-03587U85, $299 per rim), machined face with silver vents (number A-03588U20, $161 per rim) and a machined face with gray vents (number A-033588U35, $161 per rim).
