How to Fix Windows System File
- 1). Open a command prompt on your computer by clicking on the "Start" button, "All Programs," "Accessories" and "Command Prompt." If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you will need to open the command prompt with administrative privileges by right-clicking on the command prompt program name and selecting the "Run as Administrator" option.
- 2). Type "SFC /SCANNOW" in the command prompt and press the "Enter" key. This will initialize a system file scan that will verify the integrity of all Windows system files on your computer.
- 3). Insert the Windows installation CD or DVD into your computer if prompted. If a system file needs to be fixed, the file may need to be copied from the CD or DVD. Once you insert the disc, do not remove it until the SFC process has finished and you see a confirmation message in the command prompt window telling you so.
