How to Prune a Globe Willow Tree
- 1). Cut out dead or diseased branches. Don't prune until the tree has leafed out in spring. Any branches without leaves should be trimmed off. Remove any branches with curled or dried-up leaves. Be ruthless in this; it is important to remove any unhealthy branches.
- 2). Choose a central leader. The tree will send out many branches at a height of about five feet. Choose one to serve as the main trunk, or central leader, and trim off all others.
- 3). Trim excess side branches from central leader. Choose four or five evenly spaced side branches on your chosen central leader. Prune off all others, flush with the branch from which they grow.
- 4). Prune tips of remaining branches. Cut a few inches from the tips of the remaining branches. This will encourage new growth along the branch, increasing the fullness of the tree.
