How to Make an Autumn Leaf Quilt
- 1). Take a walk in your back yard and pick up four different shaped leaves which will be used for the leaf pattern. Put them in a plastic bag and take them home to trace a pattern.
- 2). On a flat surface, take out your leaves and tracing paper. Trace one leaf onto a sheet of tracing paper. You will be using four different leaf shapes. On each different leaf pattern you will be making five leaves from the different colors of fabric mentioned above. Cut out the leaf pattern from the tracing paper and attach the pattern to a stiff piece of construction paper. Cut the pattern out of the construction paper. Do this for all four different leaf shapes.
- 3). Take your patterned construction paper leaves and start with one of your colored fabrics for leaves. Pick up the ¼ yard of either your red, tangerine, light gold or burgundy colored fabrics. Pick up one of your leaf patterns and pin it to the fabric. Cut out the shape of the leaf pattern. You will need a total of 20 leaf cut-outs (four patterns, four colors and five leaves from each color).
- 4). Take your fusible web and cut 20 7-inch wide squares. Iron the squares onto the back of the assorted fabric for leaves. Cut each leaf from the fusible backing.
- 5). Taking your black marker, you will free hand draw the veins for each of your leaves.
- 6). Put your leaves aside until you are finished cutting your fabric.
- 1). Take your ruler and mark off a 30 x 68 inch piece of white cotton. You will need two pieces of this measurement for the backing. Set the backing aside.
- 2). Use your ruler to measure 10-inch square of white cotton. Cut 20 10-inch squares of white cotton for your blocks.
- 3). Pick up your dark red material measured into 2 x 9 ½ inch strips. Cut 49 strips. Set aside.
- 4). Pick up your dark gold material, measured into 2 x 9 ½ inch strips. Cut 49 strips. Set aside.
- 5). Pick up your white cotton and measure 2-inch squares. Cut 60 2-inch squares. Set aside. Pick up your green fabric and measure 2-inch squares. Cut 60 2-inch squares and set these aside.
- 6). Pick up your dark green fabric, and cut five 3-inch wide bias strips for the binding. To cut bias strips fold the top edge of the fabric down diagonally, cut 3-inch wide strips parallel to the diagonal fold. Set all cut pieces aside for quilt assembly.
- 1). You will be using your leaves and white cotton for this step. Pin a leaf diagonally to the center of the white cotton square. Set your sewing machine for a 1/8-inch seam then sew the leaf to the white cotton square. Color coordinate your thread to match the leaf color, red thread for red fabric, tangerine thread for tangerine fabric and so on. Repeat this for each of the 20 leaves and white squares that you have made. Put your squares aside.
- 2). Stitch two 2-inch squares (your white and green 2-inch blocks) alternate colors. You will be using a ¼-inch seam allowance on your sewing machine. You will be making a block of four 2-inch squares, green in the upper left-hand corner, white in the upper right-hand corner, white in the lower left-hand corner, green in the lower right-hand corner. You will have a total of 30 of these blocks. Set your blocks aside.
- 3). Pick up strips of colored fabric, the dark red and gold for the sashes. Using a ¼ inch seam allowance sews the sashes together length wise. You will have a total of 49 sashes completed. Put your sashes aside.
- 4). Pick up one of your green and white blocks and pick up one of your sewn sashes. Pin the green and white block to the end of the sash. Using a ¼-inch seam allowance sew the square to the sash. Then pick up another green and white block and pin it to the end of the sash that you have just completed, using a ¼-inch seam sew the block to the opposite end of the sash. Repeat this process until you have a total of five blocks (one on each end) and four sashes (one in between each block). You will have to make six long strips. These will be for the top and bottom of your quilt and will be for the insertion between each row of your quilt.
- 5). Pick up one of the long strips that you have just completed. Take one of the remaining strips of colored sashes (red and gold) and pin it to the open corner of the first green and white box (vertically, the sash should be going downwards to form the edge of the block). Using a ¼-inch seam sew the sash to the corner of the green and white box. Next take one of your white leaf boxes and pin it to the top of the long strip and to the side that you have just made. Using a ¼-inch seam allowance, sew the block to the edges. Repeat this procedure for the remaining three white squares for your first row. Repeat this procedure until all five rows are attached. Put the completed front of your quilt aside.
- 6). Stitch the white backing pieces together on their long edges. Press the ¼-inch seam allowance open. With the seam crosswise, spread out the back wrong side up. Smooth the quilt batting on top and trim to match the back. Center the patchwork face up, over the batting. Baste the layers together.
- 7). Roll the quilt wrong side out lengthwise to fit into your sewing machine. With straight stitches (12 per inch) and white thread top stitch along the block and sash seams. Then roll the quilt crosswise and stitch the remaining block and sash seams.
- 8). Trim the back and batting 1-1/4 inch larger than the quilt top all around. With the right sides of the fabric together, and raw edges of the binding and quilt top matching, pin the bias binding to the top and bottom edges of the quilt.
- 9). Stitch ¼-inch from the front edges. Trim the ends of the binding. Fold the binding to the back of the quilt. Turn the exposed edge in a ¼ inch, and pin the entire edge. Slip stitch the binding to the back. Sew the ends closed by hand. Your quilt is ready for use.
