Talk Like a Pirate Day - Add Pirate Icons and Wallpaper to Your Mac Desktop
September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Outfit your desktop with these pirate-themed icons and wallpapers and you'll be rolling your "r's" in no time. Arrrrr!
Changing icons or desktop wallpapers takes a matter of minutes. The most difficult part is deciding which ones to use. If you just can't settle on a single desktop wallpaper, you can use the Change Picture option in the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane to change pictures on a time frame of your choice, from every 5 seconds to once a day. (Click the System Preferences icon in the Dock, and then select the Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane.)

The 8 pirate-themed icons created by pinchoDesigns and available from SoftIcons.com have a vintage look and feel, from a quill pen paired with an inkwell and a handwritten document, to a worn wooden chest full of pirate booty (and perhaps a skull or two).
The icons are available for both the Mac OS and Windows, in ICO, ICNS, and PNG format. The PNG files range in size 16x16 pixels to 512x512 pixels.More »
The moody, atmospheric images in the Pirates Wallpaper Collection from How-To Geek will shiver your timbers. The collection features a variety of ships, including the ghostly ship shown here, as well as a pirate we wouldn't to meet on a dark night (or a sunny day, for that matter).
Images are in JPG format and are suitable for Mac or Windows desktops. The images vary in size but you can use an image editor to enlarge or crop them to fit your desktop, if necessary.More »
The pirate wallpaper collection at Wallpaper4me.com has something for almost everyone, from Lego pirates to space pirates to an anime version of Jack Sparrow. Lest you think it’s all fun and games, there’s also a pirate battle, skulls and crossbones, and a red-eyed pirate who looks ready for anything.
Images are in JPG format and automatically adjust to fit your screen size. Images are suitable for both the Mac OS and Windows.More »
Jolly Roger is a set of four pirate-themed icons created by Anthony Piraino and available from the Iconfactory web site. The icons include a treasure chest full of gold doubloons, a Jolly Roger, a pirate captain with an intimidating glare, and a first mate who doesn’t look all that much friendlier, despite his grinning countenance.
The Jolly Roger icon set is available in Mac and Windows versions, and is free for personal use.More »
The Pirates icons from PixelPress are a stunning collection of 10 high-quality images with an authentic look and feel. The images include a canon, a treasure map, a pirate ship, a telescope, a ship’s wheel, a letter of marque, a treasure chest, an anchor, a flintlock pistol, and a tattered Jolly Roger that has obviously weathered many storms.
The icons are free for personal desktop use only.More »
Desktop Nexus has more than 400 pirate wallpapers to choose from, so you may want to give that Change Picture option we mentioned above a whirl. With so many possibilities, why limit yourself to a single image?
The images range from somber to humorous, in styles from photo-realistic to anime. There are many images of Jack Sparrow (no surprise there), as well as many pirate wenches (no surprise there, either). Lots of pirate ships, skulls and crossbones, a pirate cat, and our personal favorite, a pirate Yoda.
All images are in JPG format, and are automatically optimized for your display. Although each image has a Download button, the site doesn’t actually download the image to your Mac. When you click the Download button, the Desktop Nexus web site will detect the resolution of your display and automatically adjust the image. To save the image to your Mac, right-click on the image, choose Save Image As from the pop-up menu, and save the image to the location of your choice, such as a Desktop Images folder.More »
