How to Cut Staghorn Ferns
- 1). Cut the new growth plants or "pups" off the parent plant when they are large enough that they have two to three fertile fronds of their own. (Look for a brown, mold like substance on the bottom of the fronds; these are fertile spores.)
- 2). Place the parent plant on a firm surface or cutting board.
- 3). Use a long, sharp knife to make a clean cut severing the pup from the parent. Leave some of the base on both sides of the cutting. Do not cut off small pups with undeveloped fronds. Leave immature pups attached to the parent plant until they have matured and have firmly established roots.
- 4). Soak the pup in water for at least an hour, then plant in damp peat moss in a basket or container or entwine with nylon line around a tree or board.
