Relief for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Avoid foods high in fat, caffeine and alcoholic beverages. For many people with IBS, dietary fiber may actually worsen constipation.
- Occasional use of antidiarrhea medications and laxatives may help to relieve constipation and diarrhea. Calcium and other supplements such as iron tablets may have a mild constipating effect for people with diarrhea-predominant IBS. Increased dosage of Vitamin C, flax seed oil and magnesium oxide may be used for constipation.
- Being under stress can intensify the severity of IBS. Engaging in cardiovascular exercise, yoga and running have been shown to reduce stress. Exercise has also been shown to maintain healthy weight, which may also reduce the symptoms of IBS.
