How to Grow Full Green Grass Under Any Conditions
- 1). Rake the lawn clear of rocks, sticks, and other lawn debris. Use a flexible, metal rake.
- 2). Sow the grass seed evenly over the lawn's surface by hand or by using a fertilizer spreader. Use 2 pounds of grass seed per 1,000 square feet for mature lawns and 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet for new or sparely covered lawns.
- 3). Sprinkle 1/10 inch of lawn lime over the grass seed with a shovel or fertilizer spreader. Lawn lime increases the top soil's pH balance.
- 4). Add 1/2 inch of clean compost or peat moss fertilizer over the seed and lime using a fertilizer spreader. Fertilizer adds minerals, nutrients and moisture absorbency to the top soil.
- 5). Water the freshly seeded lawn once daily for 2 weeks, or until seedlings sprout above the surface.
- 6). Trim back adjacent bushes and branches to increase sunlight on the lawn area by using outdoor trimmers. Direct sunlight is required for optimal grass growth.
