How to Clean Index.dat Files for Vista
- 1). Download and install the Index.dat Analyzer for Windows Vista from the link in the Resources section of this article. Launch the program after it is installed.
- 2). Click the "Search" button. After a brief search, the Index.dat Analyzer will return a list with the locations of all index.dat files on the computer. On a typical computer, there may be 10 or more index.dat files. Place a check in the box next to each file and click "OK."
- 3). Click the drop-down menu at the top of the window and select the first index.dat file to view the contents of.
- 4). Place a check in the box next to each item that you would like to remove from the selected index.dat file, then click the "X" icon next to the drop-down menu to delete those items. Repeat this process with each item in the drop-down list. Alternatively, click the "Auto Erase" button at the top of the screen to delete all index.dat files from the computer in one step.
