Grants for Art Students
- The W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund (smithfund.org) offers about $30,000 to promote humanistic photography. Applicants must submit evidence of their photography, a resume, as well as a written project proposal. The Smith Fund also established the Howard Chapnick Grant, which awards $5,000 to students interested in photography related fields, like editing, research and education.
- The Art Students League of New York (theartstudentsleague.org) provides multiple grants and scholarships. Grants include the Nessa Cohen Grant (for artists interested in painting or pastels), the Xavier and Ethel Edwards Gonzalez Grant (requires league membership but provides painters with money to travel and study in Spain), and the Lloyd Sherwood Grant (students interested in oil, acrylic or mixed media). Plus, the League provides over 40 merit scholarships for an array of students, such as abstract painters, sculptors, immigrant students and physically disabled artists.
- The Aaron Siskind Individual Photographers Fellowship Grants (aaronsiskind.org) offer a maximum of $7,000 to promote still photography. Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents.
- The Association of Hispanic Arts offers the Durfee Artists' Resource for Completion Grant (durfee.org). Applicants must reside in Los Angeles County and can receive up to $3,500.
- The Alexia Foundation for World Peace (alexiafoundation.org) annually hosts a photography contest to promote world peace and cultural awareness. The Foundation also gives grants for students to study photojournalism in London. There are different competition rules for undergraduate and graduate students.
- The Boston University Center for the Study of Asia offers grants to graduate art students who are interested in Asian Art. For example, the Henry Luce Foundation funds grants for Boston University students who pursue a Certificate in Museum Studies along with a master's degree in Asian Art History.
