How to Paint Your Favorite Animals in Pen Ink & Watercolor
- 1). Lightly sketch the animal on the watercolor paper using the photos as reference. Try to find the overall geometric shapes of the animal and then further refine your drawing, erasing any unnecessary lines.
- 2). Trace pencil drawing with pen and ink. Dark areas of the animal can be filled in with crosshatching, which looks like tiny tic tac toe boards. Or you can use small dots placed closely together. This is known as stippling.
- 3). Paint watercolor over pen and ink drawing. Leaving white areas white, work from light to dark. If you get too much paint in an area, dab it with a dry paper towel. Leave finished painting on a flat surface to dry.
