How to Use Upholstery Foam for Insulation
- 1). Measure the area you wish to insulate. If it is a gap between walls or an attic, you will need to measure in three dimensions. If you are using the foam to insulate a door or attic hatch, you only need to measure the size of the door or hatch.
- 2). Purchase thicker foam for a higher insulation value. If you are using foam from an old couch or other piece of furniture, remove the cloth covering.
- 3). Clean out the area you will be insulating.
- 4). Cut the foam to the size needed.
- 5). Push the foam inside the wall gap or ceiling. Reach around with your hand and check that every corner is filled. If you are installing the foam on a door or hatch, spread some silicone caulking on the hatch and press the foam against it. The caulking will take 30 minutes to dry.
