How to Get Your CDL in Pennsylvania

29
    • 1). Prepare for the CDL knowledge test. The knowledge test addresses laws, rules and regulations associated with driving a commercial vehicle. Pennsylvania offers the "Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual" to help prospective commercial drivers prepare for the knowledge exam.

    • 2). Gather all application documents and travel to a state Driver's License Center. You must submit a completed DL-31CD form, your current Pennsylvania driver's license, your Social Security card, proof of Pennsylvania residency and proof of identification. You must also pay the Department of Transportation all related fees at the time of application by check or money order. The CDL application form provides all fee costs.

    • 3). Take the required knowledge test. After your application has been processed, you will be authorized to complete the necessary knowledge test and be issued a Pennsylvania CDL learner's permit, allowing you to prepare for your road test.

    • 4). Schedule and take a road test. You may not take the road test until you have held a CDL permit for at least 15 days. The road test is given in the type of vehicle you are seeking a CDL for and consists of a pre-trip inspection, a basic control skills test and a road test. Once you have completed and passed your road test, you will receive your CDL.
