Yamaha Road Star Starting Problems
- Something as simple as a blown fuse could prevent the Road Star from starting. Remove the main fuse, located in the starter relay case behind Panel B on the right side of the motorcycle. If the connection at its center is broken, the fuse has blown. Replace it with another 50-amp fuse.
- Another quick fix, inadequate amounts of fuel can also stop the Road Star from starting. Check the fuel gauge and refuel as needed. The Road Star make takes only unleaded gasoline, and Yamaha recommends that owners use fuel with a research octane rating of 91 or higher.
- Ensure that the Road Star's battery is not damaged or discharged. The battery is also located on the right side of the bike. If it is damaged, replace it with another 12-volt, 12 ampere-hour battery. Yamaha instructs owners to take the bike to a certified dealer if the battery has become discharged.
- One of the most important ignition system components, a faulty spark plug is another potential culprit when dealing with Road Star starting problems. Each Road Star has two spark plugs, located inside each of the engine's cylinders. Remove each plug and replace it if the insulator tip is burned or damaged. The Road Star takes either NGK DPR7EA-9 or DENSO X22EPR-U9 plugs with a gap set between 0.031 and 0.035 inches.
