• A CSV file is a plain-text file containing a series of values with commas in between. The values may be anything from the numbers of a budget spreadsheet to the names and descriptions of a business's client list.
  
  

Use

• Several programs can create and read CSV files. Microsoft Excel uses them extensively, and Outlook can export and import CSV files for transportation. Other common applications that use CSV files are OpenOffice, Microsoft Works, WordPerfect Office and NeoOffice.
  
  

Options

• If you don't have the program that created the CSV file, you can open it in a word processor or even a simple text editor such as Notepad or TextEdit. The simple nature of a CSV file makes it possible to edit the file in a text editor while keeping its functionality intact.
