Definition: Transurethral resection of the prostate is the most common procedure performed to remove the inner portion of the prostate for patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, also known as enlarged prostate).

TURP uses electrocautery (in this case, the surgical removal of the tissue with a high frequency current) and insertion of a rigid fiberoptic camera through the urethra.

Examples: He was extremely irritated by lower urinary tract symptoms, such as frequent urination at night, intermittent urination, and not feeling like he could completely empty his bladder. All of these symptoms stemmed from an enlarged prostate. He decided to have the most common surgical procedure done for an enlarged prostate, a transurethral resection of the prostate, or TURP. It has the longest track record of all procedures currently available and a high success rate.
