Do It Yourself Replacement for Vinyl Windows

    • 1). Measure the existing windows that you will be replacing and make careful note of the position in the house of each window that you have measured. Measure the size of the window opening rather than the inside or outside measurement of the window.

    • 2). Estimate your materials cost. Choose the best windows for your job. You can purchase windows which are very economical, or those which are higher priced. Compare the energy index for each window. The higher quality windows will save money in the long run through lower energy costs.

    • 3). Purchase or order your windows. You can sometimes have them delivered for free or for a minimal cost, which can save time and money.

    • 4). Remove the windows one at a time. Start by taking out the screws and nails with a screwdriver and screwgun or hammer. Break the seal of any caulking around the edges of the interior and exterior of the window with a sharp utility knife that has a new blade. Use a prybar to loosen and remove the old windows. You might need to use a chisel or strong, thick screwdriver to loosen some of the windows. Make sure that there are no screws or hidden nails holding the window in place.

    • 5). Clean the surface area of the window opening with a scraper to ensure that the new windows will be installed on a flat, smooth surface. Remove any old caulking.

    • 6). Install the new vinyl replacement windows by gently placing them in the opening. Use a level on the horizontal and vertical sections of the window to make sure that it is level and straight. Don't jam the window into place if it doesn't fit correctly. In the case of a bad fit, work with the wood frame of the window rather than trying to force the window in, which might result in damaging or breaking the window. Use shims to firm up the window, but don't install it too tight. Allow for a little expansion of the window.

    • 7). Screw two screws on each perimeter and then test the window to assure that it opens and closes nicely. Install the screws using an electric screw gun. You can use a hand screwdriver if you need to to tighten the screws as well.

    • 8). When you finish installing all of the windows, or as you complete each window, whatever is your preference, neatly caulk the perimeters of the window with white caulking or silicone. Wipe off excess with a wet rag. Clean up afterwards. Dispose of the old windows and debris in a dumpster or with a truck or van at a legal garbage dump.
