Tools Needed for a 35 HP Evinrude Carburetor Rebuild
- A set of Phillips and standard screwdrivers is essential for carburetor disassembly and reassembly. A good set has drivers with large and small size tips, and long and short screwdriver shafts for hard-to-reach areas and variously sized screws. You may encounter "sticky" screws that haven't been removed since the carburetor came out of the factory, so don't make the mistake of using the wrong size screwdriver and hoping it will be "good enough." More often than not, doing so leads to stripped screw heads and more problems than you started with.
- After screws, hex-headed bolts and nuts are the second most common fastener on carburetor assemblies. Because of the close quarters of the Evinrude 35, these fasteners are usually in hard-to-reach places that make a socket set impractical to use. The answer to this is a complete combination wrench set.
- Carburetors are made up of dozens of tiny parts, some of which may be hard or impossible to find replacements for especially if your 35-horsepower Evinrude is an older model. Any time you are going to do carburetor work, it is essential to have a compartmentalized small parts tray on hand to organize and keep track of all these tiny pieces. Translucent plastic organizers for fishing lures work well for storing carburetor parts.
- The basic purpose of a carburetor rebuild is to thoroughly clean the internal passages and parts of your Evinrude carburetor and to replace worn out seals, o-rings and other parts. Left alone, gasoline will age and create gummy varnish-like deposits inside the delicate metering systems of a carburetor. Debris in the fuel system combine with this gasoline varnish into pockets of hardened gunk that must be cleaned out. Use a spray cans of carburetor cleaner and a brass brushes for this task. Plastic containers in which to soak parts and a good supply of shop rags are also must-haves when cleaning a carburetor.
