Colors make our world beautiful. According to physics, the color of an object, is determined by the color reflected or absorbed by that object. While thinking about colors, the first thing coming to our mind will be VIBGYOR. It represents the Spectrum of colors Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red. In this Color spectrum, the colors are arranged in the increasing order of their wave lengths. The colors have huge impact on our lives, culture, feelings, religion, rituals etc. Adding color to life', ‘passed with flying colors' are some of the very common usages in our day to day life.

Color can be used as a non verbal form of communication, which is referred as color symbolism. For example traffic signals use red, green and yellow worldwide to represent traffic rules.

Meaning of each color may be different in different cultures. It is merely an individual perception. Usually red is the color of action, blue is the color of trust, orange is the color of optimism and green is the color of growth and balance. One color can have entirely different meanings in different countries. In East, Yellow is the color of wisdom. In France, Yellow is the color of jealousy, in Greece it denotes sadness, in Africa it shows high rank and in Middle East it denotes mourning. In general Black is considered as the color of death but in China, White is the color of death, where white is the color of peace worldwide.

There are many positive and negative emotions associated with each color. Let us have a look.
  1. Black – evil, death, strength, mystery, protection, serious, dramatic, secrecy.
  2. Yellow – Bright, friendship, sunshine, joy, coward, unstable, irresponsible.
  3. White – Purity, freshness, cold, clean, innocence.
  4. Blue – Tranquility, loyalty, security, masculinity, calming, heaven, truth, confidence.
  5. Brown – Relaxing, casual, confident, nature, assuring, genuine, endurance.
  6. Pink -- Femininity, sweet, immaturity, happy, romance, love, friendship.
  7. Red – love, energy, action, danger, desire, determination, passion.
  8. Orange - Courage, warmth, attraction, ignorance, superiority,.                     
  9. Green-  Prosperity, money, growth, fertility, jealousy, life.                  

Use of Colors in Retail and Business

Red is used in urgency- Sales.  Green is used to calm people. Blue is considered as the color of trust and generally used by banks and other financial institutions. Black, it denotes power is used in impulsive sales. Navy blue is the color of selling cheaper products. Pink is the color used in the sales of feminine products and romantic products.  Yellow as it is the color of attraction, it is generally used for displays and windows. Purple is believed to be a calming color so it is used in anti aging products                

Colors can be used to represent human feelings. Anger is usually termed as red; confusion is termed as ‘feeling blue'. There are many other examples like this. Colors have huge impact on human psychology. Psychologist prefers color therapies to many other medications to treat mentally challenged patients. Color Therapy uses the colors of Spectrum to rebalance the seven Chakras of our body. These Chakras are the seven major energy centers of our body. In this Chakra of colors Violet is in the crown, Indigo refers the third eye, Blue refers throat, Green refers heart, Yellow is color of the solar plexus, Orange refers as sacral and Red is the base.

In India, Black is the color of evil and death, while white is the color of purity and peace. Red is the color of Indian marriages. It refers the bondage between husband and wife. I remember my mom had been telling me to look on green colored objects while dressing wounds,when I was a child as green is a calm color. In Indian National flag, we have tri colors Kesari (saffron), White and Indian Green. Saffron denotes courage and sacrifice of the Nation. White is the symbol of light, the path of truth to guide our conduct. White refers to purity, peace and truth. Indian green is the symbol of our relation to soil, plant life. It means prosperity. In India we even have a festival of colors – Holi.  Holi is celebrated as a festival of success over evils.

Colors are the base of our imagination. We cannot even imagine a world without any colors. GO GREEN is the slogan of world peace and prosperity. Let us hope for a new dawn where this world is filled with bright colors of love, prosperity and peace only.
