Hardi Plank Siding Installation Instructions
- 1). Measure the area you want to cover with siding with a tape measure. Consult the James Hardie website to choose the type of siding you want to use. Buy the amount of siding you need according to your measurements. Buy the appropriate nails for either wood or steel framing.
- 2). Install a water-resistant barrier that complies with the local regulations of your area. Install the barrier before installing the siding.
- 3). Set up a stable, flat work surface to cut the siding. Cut the siding to fit the measurements of your wall with manual, electric or pneumatic shears.
- 4). Install the corner posts and J channels. Cut the trim pieces to fit using the shears. Position the trim pieces and attach them with a hammer and galvanized nails.
- 5). Position 1 1/4-inch starter strips along the bottom of the wall. Check if the starter strip is level to the ground using a carpenter's level. Attach the starter strips with a hammer and galvanized nails, nailing every 24 inches into the studs.
- 6). Install the first length of siding onto the starter strip using a pneumatic tool and galvanized nails. Position the nails 3/8-inch from the edge of the siding plank. Install the next length of siding by overlapping it with the plank below by 1 ¼ inches. Drive in the nails perpendicular to the siding and the framing. Continue installing each plank of siding over the one below it.
- 7). Treat all cut edges with caulk to keep water out. Apply a thin bead of caulking to the cut edges of the siding and trim with a caulking gun and latex caulking.
